Friday Forum: Literary Likes & Dislikes

While we're celebrating the book launch our very own CHICKS ROCK! blogger, Kekla, we were curious about your own reading and writing habits.

What are some of your favorite books and why? What about favorite authors? If you're a writer, what do you like to write about?

I still love (read: am obsessed with) the Harry Potter series. I love that depending on my mood I can either get completely lost in a fantasy world, or I can analyze it and draw parallels to the real world.

I love the Harry Potter series, as well as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit...Tolkien really was a genius! My favorite author has to be Jane Austen, because she wrote about people and a society she lived in, with a sense of irony and humor that people can still relate to. I personally like writing about my impressions while traveling to other places, either here or abroad.

I'm a huge fan of Samuel R. Delany, who's an amazing, subversive African American sci-fi writer. Also, I love Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go, The Remains of the Day), Jeanette Winterson (especially Art and Lies and Written on the Body), Kathryn Davis' The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf, Colson Whitehead's The Intuitionist, Jostein Gaarder (particularly Sophie's World), and the plays of Caryl Churchill, Tom Stoppard and Tony Kushner.

Of course, Harry Potter is also fantastic!
